Waddesdon, nestled in the heart of a sprawling estate that has evolved over the years, has become synonymous with enchantment and conservation. Since its acquisition in 1874, the Rothschild family has meticulously enhanced and nurtured both the aesthetics and conservational value of this extraordinary estate. What was once a modest 2,700 acres in 1874 has now burgeoned to an expansive 6,000 acres by 2011, showcasing a commitment to preserving the natural beauty surrounding Waddesdon.
Managed by a dedicated team of foresters and farmers, the estate has seen thoughtful expansion through the acquisition of adjoining lands. Today, the in-hand operation covers 3,200 acres of arable land and 800 acres of meticulously maintained parkland. In addition to in-hand farming, five tenant farmers play a crucial role in maintaining the tenure and diversity of the estate.
Christmas at Waddesdon
Witness the magical transformation of Waddesdon this Christmas. From November 22nd to January 1st, visitors are invited to experience a holiday extravaganza that brings classic tales to life within the grandeur of the Manor and its grounds.
The Christmas Fair, running from November 22nd to December 17th, invites visitors to immerse themselves in the festive spirit. The grounds are open from 12 to 7 pm, allowing visitors to explore charming wooden chalets housing hand-selected stalls amidst twinkling trees. The fair offers a sensory feast, with sights, sounds, and smells of Christmas creating a delightful atmosphere.
A Festive wonderland
However, the true magic unfolds within the Manor itself. The house undergoes a fantastical metamorphosis into a winter wonderland, featuring themed displays inspired by classic tales. This year, be prepared to journey through the enchanting worlds of Alice in Wonderland, the Snow Queen’s kingdom, and Peter Pan’s Neverland. The Manor’s rooms are exquisitely decorated, including the Bachelor’s Wing for the first time since 2019, creating a mesmerizing experience for visitors.
The transformation is not limited to the interior. Outside, the Manor’s fairy-tale façade is brought to life with spellbinding animated projections, a new addition for 2023. These projections, created by the celebrated artist Jamie Shiels, known for his work at Buckingham Palace, The National Gallery, and the 2012 London Olympics, combine fantastical festive scenes with unique treasures from Waddesdon’s collection.
Light trail
The Christmas celebrations extend to the Aviary gardens with a new light trail, interactive elements, and seasonal favorites. As the air fills with music, visitors can walk beneath a glowing canopy of orbs, witness twinkling starbursts, and marvel at larger-than-life 3D birds lit with fairy lights. The light trail, in partnership with light art pioneers Luminism, offers an immersive experience.
The Coach House at the Stables adds a touch of community spirit to the celebrations. Artwork created by thousands of local schoolchildren, inspired by “The Lights That Dance in the Night” by Yuval Zommer, fills the space. Willow lanterns of wolves and puffins, created in collaboration with artist Michelle Dufaur, illuminate the area, and overhead, the Aurora Borealis adds a glittering touch.
